Different Types of Wigs

In today's society, wearing wigs is becoming more and more popular than ever before. Women in particular are attracted to the wearing of wigs, and celebrities, including Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Jenna Jameson, Tyra Banks, and Britney Spears, have furthered the popularity of fake hairpieces by sporting wigs in their everyday lives.

Of course, most people who wear wigs do so because of a severe hair loss brought on by aging or a variety of illnesses. Women who undergo chemo treatments and experience hair loss also frequently wear wigs. But aside from hiding baldness, people are beginning to wear wigs for fashion purposes. Wigs offer an easy way to change a style or to don an already perfectly cut and styled hairdo. Additionally, some religious and cultural practices require the wearing of wigs.

No matter the reason for why people (and women in particular) wear wigs, there are a variety of different wigs that range in material and fit that people should be aware of before they purchase a wig for themselves. Above all, if you're looking for a wig, you will want one that feels comfortable and looks natural.

Standard Cap Wigs

First of all, if you're thinking about purchasing a wig, it's important to know about the different parts of the wig. And aside from the hair, most important part of the wig is the cap. The cap is the base of the wig that sits on the head and is what the hair is attached to. There are variety of different caps that are used on wigs, including the standard cap, which is the most common and the most affordable type of wig cap. On a standard cap, the hair is machine-sewn onto the cap. The layers of hair on the cap are pre-designed into a particular style, and the crown of the cap is frequently teased or crimped so that onlookers are unable to see through the hair and see the cap. People like this standard-cap wigs because they give the hair a lift that makes the hair seem more voluminous.

Monofilament Cap Wigs

Another type of cap is the monofilament cap which incorporates a thin piece of material at the crown that is made of nylon or polyester mesh. The mesh is breathable and presents an illusion of skin, and because its mesh, the wearer's scalp is partially revealed, which is beneficial in that the base of the wig naturally reveals the scalp like normal hair does. With a monofilament cap, the scalp revealed is the wearer's natural skin color.

People love these types of wigs because they look very natural and are versatile. They can be styled in a variety of different ways because each hair on a monofilament cap is individually hand tied at the crown so that the hair can be brushed or parted in any direction. The monofilament cap is also soft and is more comfortable to wear than other types of wigs.

Capless Wigs

Some wigs are also capless. These wigs are lighter than capped wigs and are not as warm when wearing. In place of a cap, they have vertical lace strips, with spaces between the strips, which make them one of the most breathable types of wigs.

Human Hair Wigs

Wigs also range widely in material. Some of the best wigs are made of human hair. Human hair wigs are the most natural looking wigs, but are more expensive than wigs made of synthetic materials. With human hair wigs, the hair can be cut, styled, dyed, or permed just like naturally-grown hair. There are basically four different types of human hair used on wigs, and they are Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, and Caucasian, so that people of many different ethnicities can find a wig that is perfect for them. But because they are made of real human hair, these wigs must also be cared for as if they were the result of naturally grown hair, which means they must be shampooed, dried, styled, and conditioned. Essentially, these wigs offer all of the benefits and work of having real human hair.

Synthetic Wigs

Wigs can also be made of a variety of other materials including horse hair, wool, feathers, or buffalo hair. But aside from human hair, the most popular types of materials used in making wigs are synthetic fibers. And many of the higher quality synthetic wigs are almost indistinguishable from human hair wigs. And synthetic wigs offer the benefits of being easier to care for and costing less than human hair wigs. However, they are not meant to styled and can be damaged if a person used curling irons, blow dryers, or hot rollers to style them.

Lace Wigs

Lace wigs are a particularly popular type of wig because it provides for a more natural look than many other wigs. More often than not, this is the type of wig that celebrities typically wear. Lace wigs are full wigs that have some mesh lace attached to the front of the wig just beyond the hairline. The mesh lace on the wig is custom fitted to the wearer's head and is trimmed and glued (temporarily) to a person's skin right around the hairline. The hair of the wig prevents anyone from seeing the mesh lace, and it is the lace that allows the hair to part naturally on a person's head.

Vacuum Wigs

Vacuum wigs are another popular type of wig that are custom designed to fit the wearer's head.
First, a plaster mold is taken of a person's head so that professionals can create a wig that will provide the proper fit and produce suction on the head. Vacuum wigs have a silicone base on which hair is injected. Because the base is solid, these wigs can be quite warm and may take some time getting adjusted to; however, their custom design and high detailing make vacuum wigs some of the most expensive wigs on the market, as well as some of the most sought after.

So, whether you're looking for a wig to cover baldness or just to change your hair style, knowing more about the different types of wigs available can help you figure out which type of wig is right for you.

All About Lace Fronts

Whether you are experiencing hair loss, or just want a fabulous new look, a lace front wig is a great hair option. Once a secret among celebrities, lace wigs are now widely available and affordable.

A lace front wig is a wig made with human hair tied to a lace base. The two types of lace used in lace front wigs are French lace and Swiss lace. A "lace front" wig has lace at the hairline that is secured with liquid adhesive or tape. When the lace is adhered to your own hairline, it gives an invisible hairline, making it look as though the hair is growing out of your scalp.

wigs are made with Remy hair. Remy (or Remi) hair is the complete hair strand and
has not been weakened by stripping. Remy hair is created by careful processing which leaves the cuticle in place. The result is stronger, superior hair. Still, this hair has undergone
some processing (such as cleaning, curly perming or dyeing), so it should also be treated gently. Remy hair is often referred to as "cuticle hair" because the cuticle is left intact. Hair
that is stripped of the cuticle is often chemically treated to give the hair an artificial softness
and shine, which wears down over time, causing tangling and a poor appearance. Remy hair
does not have this problem and is the highest quality hair you can purchase.

Each wig is handmade, with experienced wig makers securing one or more hair strands at a
time, to the lace base. Our knotting technique creates a multi-directional hairstyling, with a natural hair flow. Knots are lightened for a realistic looking "scalp". Each wig takes over thirty hours of labor to complete.

The additional lace in the front of the wig is not meant to be left on for wear. Lace front units are designed to have the additional
material trimmed prior to wear, what is left is a natural hairline which appears to grown from
your scalp.

All

What is a full lace wig?

Full lace wigs are manufactured with a cap, and a thin lace sewn on top of the cap.

* Individual hairs are then sewn into the thin lace

* Full lace wigs will have lace all around the unit, and require the lace to be cut all around
the unit.

* You will be cutting a hairline around your entire head. By doing so, once done you can
wear your hair anyway you like, ponytails, up-dos etc. Think about it. With the wig,
you have just cut yourself a new hairline around your entire head.

* Once the unit is applied, you will have on a full hair wig - but the front , back, and sides
of the hair wig will not be like a regular wig. The wig will appear that all of the hair is
growing directly from your head.

What is a Lace Front ?

Lace front wigs are manufactured with a thin lace that extends from ear to ear across the hairline.

*

Lace front wigs are made similar to a regular ladies wig along the back and sides of the unit.

*

When you receive the unit the lace will be really long in the front, you will cut the lace along the front of the unit. The goal here is to create yourself a new hairline. You will not cut all of the lace, as you will apply adhesive to the lace/your new hairline.

*

Once the unit is applied, you will have on a full hair wig - but the front of the hair wig will not be like a regular wig. The wig will appear that it is growing directly from your head.

Living with alopecia

Paparazzi photos of supermodel Naomi Campbell revealed severe hair loss from Traction Alopecia. There were lots of murmurs online about a woman who is prized for her looks being "imperfect." But for many Black women, seeing Campbell's scalp was sadly familiar...

It's believed that Campbell's hair loss came from years of damaging hair weaves that eventually broke away the root of her hair along the sides -- one of the most common forms of hair loss for Black women.

It's a scary reality for a woman to witness her hair thin, break off or fall out. In many cases, a change in treatment gave the hair a second chance at becoming healthy or growing back. But for too many Black women this hair loss becomes permanent. In most cases it comes from years of hair "abuse" -- from bad weaves, too-tight braids, too heavy or tight locs and the misuse of perms, dyes and chemical treatments -- or from the actual autoimmune skin condition of Alopecia Areata, which affects more than 4.7 million in the United States alone.

New York-based interior designer Sheila Bridges suffers from Alopecia Areata. At the time she was diagnosed with the disease, she was busy with her career, filming episodes for her design show.

Bridges, who choose to shave her head after turning 40, when the hair loss was at its worst, was very frank about living with the disease, admitting that while it is not life-threatening, it is "life-altering."

Bridges had been diagnosed with Alopecia years before, but it wasn't until her late 30s, when it started coming out in bunches, that she realized she had a serious problem. For years, Bridges was known for her full, curly hair. When the hair loss was small and dime-sized, it had been easy to hide. Now she was filming a TV show where it was important for her look stay consistent. While she wanted to grieve the loss of her hair, she had to contend with her TV show being up for renewal that year.

"I couldn't have different looking hair. I hadn't finished producing the actual shows yet," she said. "There's already a lot of shame associated with it anyway, but it made me feel even worse that I had to keep it a secret. I wasn't ashamed because of what was happening because it wasn't not the person fault. No one knows what the person is going through ."

Some days it is still very hard for a person who suffers from alopecia.

But it's very, very hard. Some days it's a piece of cake and other days you're sort of brought to your knees. People can be very cruel. They make a lot of assumptions about you. And that's I think that is a very difficult thing to live with, always living with this cloud that hovers over -- that you're sick or that you're dying and there's a lot of emotional baggage for the people you interact with. How they deal with you. How they approach you. Navigating your way through this thing is really tough."

"They taught me that hair is more like an accessory. You won't die if you don't have any hair. It's just something on your head. It doesn't define you as a person. It doesn't make you who you are," she said.

Gale is also married and found her husband's love and support very helpful. "He knows all about my condition," she said. "He doesn't really care if I don't have hair or not."

Gale thinks hair loss can be very different psychologically for Black women, many of whom deal with negative views about their natural hair or pine for longer hair. She said when in school, almost every girl she knew permed her hair, wore extensions or did both -- many wanting long hair.

"Long hair was considered beautiful and on some levels it still is,". "Long hair is considered good hair. Basically some people believed that if you have really short hair it's not feminine."

That desire for long hair can have dire consequences if hair isn't cared for properly. A stylist for more than 20 years, Black women and baldness is a reality she confronts daily at her boutique, New York New York Hair Design in St. Louis.

"I see it all the time," Small said. "Due to artificial hair, due to bonding, braids and stress. Misuse of brushing hair."

Small, who is running a healthy hair campaign to educate Black women about their hair, vigorously consults her clients to find ways to get the look they want without damaging their hair.

Of her clients who receive chemical relaxers, Small is encourages them to reduce the number of relaxers they have a year (from one every four-to-six weeks, to 12 weeks without a touch-up). Also, 25 percent of Small's relaxer clients are transitioning to wearing their hair natural.

"When you apply the relaxer there really isn't that much leeway (in a four-to-six week cycle). Hair only grows one-fourth of an inch per month," Small said, adding that our hair is at its strongest at the root, but if relaxers are applied with too much frequency hair will "get weaker and weaker at the root.

"If you condition your hair you can train it to go longer over a period time, seeing the hair get longer. In extending the relaxer the hair is growing," she said.

There are many causes of hair loss in women. Even changes in hormone levels due to menopause can cause hair loss, but so much of the loss Small sees as a beautician is preventable.

Small suggests that people who wear their hair in braids or use weaves
pay attention to their hair -- if it seems to be braided too tight. Blisters will form at the root of the scalp, meaning there isn't enough blood circulation, which leads to hair damage. Small also stresses that people watch their diet. Hair is 97 percent protein and various vitamin deficiencies, like not enough Vitamin B, will cause problems as well. Small also recommends roller sets to dry hair, weekly deep conditioners and dressing the hair at night.

"Use a polyester scarf so natural oils will stay in your hair. Use less gel and brushes, but if you use gel, use non-alcohol based gel," Small said. "Put on light oil, like jojoba oil or olive oil to create moisture retention."

Small also recommends that if you do use hair weaves to stay away from bonding. Bonding should never be placed on hair or scalp because when the hair is removed it rips hair out, snatching it out from the root. For those who have sewn-in weaves, Small recommends that women should visit their salon every two weeks for maintenance. Often it is hard for women with weaves to properly shampoo their hair and it's best to have the hair stylist do it. Improperly washed hair that has a weave sewn in can cause other problems, like mildewing of the scalp, leading to dandruff and other scalp problems.

By going to a stylist to help you maintain your weave, Small points out they can fix any damaged threads and prevent the hair from becoming matted. She also says women should not comb or brush their hair too strenuously if they have a weave, as that too can cause damage. Women should also be mindful to secure their hair at night by tying it up to also prevent damage. Weaves also shouldn't be worn for longer than six-to-eight weeks, says Small.

Hair loss doesn't have to be permanent. It can be preventable. But even if strikes, women have options on how to deal and cope with such a loss. It's not the end of anything. For Sheila Bridges she saw her hair loss as an opportunity to show women how they are more than their hair.

You have to be able to hold your head up high. .Some people don't even have Alopecia. It makes an impact. In my own small way, I feel like I'm doing the right thing because it's helpful for people to see women without hair."

How to properly care for your wigs

Q: How do I care for my wig?

When not in use, always store your wig on a mannequin or wig stand to maintain its shape. Frequency of cleaning will depend on your environment, lifestyle and amount of perspiration. Suggested guidelines for cleaning are after 10 to 14 days of wear. To clean and condition your wig, follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with your wig. For more information, please read below.

For Synthetic Wigs

Only shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays and other styling accessories designed specifically for synthetic wigs should be used to take care of synthetic hair wigs. After shampooing and conditioning, make sure to rinse your wig thoroughly in cool water. Always use a soft towel and carefully blot dry (do not scrub). Allow your wig to dry naturally overnight on a wig stand.

For Synthetic and human blended wigs

Only shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays and other styling accessories designed specifically for synthetic wigs should be used to take care of synthetic hair or blended (synthetic/human) hair wigs. After shampooing and conditioning, make sure to rinse your wig thoroughly in cool water. Always use a soft towel and carefully blot dry (do not scrub). Allow your wig to dry naturally overnight on a wig stand.

For Human Hair Wigs

Special products should also be used on human hair wigs because the hair in human hair wigs has been processed several times and is vulnerable to damage. Any high quality shampoo formulated for processed hair may be used, however, I strongly recommends you use the products made especially for wigs to protect your investment.

FAQ about wigs ...

FAQ

Q: Which should I choose, synthetic or human hair?

Synthetic Hair

Today's better quality synthetic wigs are virtually indistinguishable from human hair, except to the most practiced eye. Synthetic wigs are easier to care for and lower priced. The monofilament/Kanekalon fiber "hair" used to make synthetic wigs has "memory" which means it maintains its wave or curl, texture and volume, requiring minimal upkeep. Synthetic wigs, however, are not designed to accept a permanent wave or color change and can be permanently damaged by the use of curling irons, blow dryers or hot rollers.

Human Hair

A human hair wig is the most natural looking option. It can be cut, styled, perm or colored to suit your personal taste. Human hair wigs are more durable than synthetic wigs. However, human hair wigs are more expensive that synthetic wigs and require more care. They have to be shampooed, dried, styled and conditioned, just like your natural hair. Like your hair, they can lose their style if they get wet and frizz on humid days.

Q: Can I color a human hair hairpiece?

Human hair wigs can be colored and highlighted like growth hair. The drawback is that the color will fade with prolonged exposure to sun just like growth hair and will need to be recovered or highlighted. Coloring a human hair wig requires special training and should never be attempted at home. A trained stylist will always do a test strand and in some cases may try multiple tests to achieve the desired shade.

Q: Can I perm a human hair hairpiece?

Perming a human hair hairpiece is very different from perming growth hair. It should never be attempted with home perm kits. A human hair wig will tend to hold the perm as it does not “grow out” like growth hair. Consult your stylist.

Q: Can a mix of human and synthetic hair be used in the same hairpiece?

Jenny's Hairsense offers a blend of human hair and synthetic fiber wig. This can provide the advantages of both: some sway and movement and the natural feel of the human hair, along with the style keeping and easy care of the synthetic.

Q: How many hairpieces do I need to live a normal, active life?

Regardless of the type of wig you choose, it is always a good idea to have a back-up hairpiece. With synthetic wigs, an unplanned exposure to sudden heat may cause frizzing that a professional will need to fix or, in most cases, tossed out. If this happens, you will need an alternative hairpiece to wear. Though human hair wigs can last longer, they require periodic repairs during their lifespan by a professional. Your back-up hairpiece should allow you to feel comfortable in any situation.

Q: How do I know what size to get?

Average wigs fit heads from 21.5" to 22.5". Ninety-five percent of our customers fall into this range. For instructions on how to measure your head size, click here. Your wig should be worn on your natural hairline, approximately four fingers above the eyebrows. The back of the wig should be pulled down to the natural hairline in the back. Wigs have adjustable elastic tabs in the back so you can adjust your wig for a secure, comfortable fit. There are also small tabs in the front of the ears that can be adjusted to hold the wig close to the face.

Q: How do I put on a wig?

Wigs should be worn on the natural hairline (for most people it is four finger-widths above the eyebrow).

* - Remove wig from the plastic bag or box. Gently remove the protective hair net from your wig. Give your wig a few good shakes to separate the fibers and give some body to the hair. Some wigs need to be shaken to release the preset styling.
* - Brush your hair off your face at the top and sides. If your hair is too long, you may want use bobby pins to help keep it off your face, back at the sides, and up at the nape. Some women use a wig liner or wig cap to keep their existing hair in place.
* - Hold your wig at the sides with the woven label in back. Place it at your natural hairline and slide it on from front to back. Adjust the wig as needed so the front edge is just over your natural hairline. Use the ear tabs to center your wig from left to right. Adjust the Velcro tabs in the back if necessary for a more secure fit.
* - Tuck in any stray hairs at the front, sides and nape. Now you're ready for styling!

Q: How do hairpieces stay on the head?

A variety of attachment methods are available. Depending on your individual pattern of hair loss, personal life-style and desire for security, you can choose one or another. Hair weaving or bonding (i.e., gluing or tying a hairpiece to existing hair) is generally not recommended as it can place a lot of strain on existing hair. Full wigs can be attached to growth hair with mini-clips. The clips should be rotated periodically to avoid putting prolonged pressure on the same area. Attachment to a bare scalp generally requires double-sided tape.

Q: How do I choose the right color for me?

Most hair colors fall into either 'warm' or 'cool' families. If you better with gold jewelry, you are in the gold type. Gold types are more suited to warmer colors. If you have golden, olive or dark skin and brown or dark eyes (most Latinas, Asians and African Americans fall into this category). You tan easily and the veins in your inner wrists are green. If you feel you look better in silver jewelry, you are a silver type. For Silver types, the color choices are cool tones. You're a 'cool' if you have fair skin and blue or green eyes. You burn before you tan and the veins in your wrists run blue. If you're confused because you sometimes burn, sometimes tan, you likely skew warm.

If you have warm skin, opt for golden shades such as caramel and bronze in a darker shade than your skin. Avoid jet-black hair which will wash you out and if you do opt for a golden shade, don't go too light If you have cool shade, avoid colors that will highlight the ruddiness of your skin tone: Gold, auburn and copper. Ash blondes and cool browns work best.

First time wig wears

Choosing Your Wig

Step 1. Measure you head size.

Step 2. Choose the style that best fits the shape of your face. The length and style of your wig is the most important factor to complement your face.

Step 3. Consider a color. Try to stick to your normal hair color. When in doubt, choose a lighter shade because darker hues can overwhelm your face and make you look pale.

Step 4. Synthetic or human hair. Synthetic wigs require the least amount of care and they come pre-styled. Human hair wigs allow you to create styles just like you would your own hair.

Step 5. Ask yourself how you'll feel. One of the most common reasons for a wig is because the woman is going through chemotherapy. This type of illness treatment can cause you to feel weak and tired at times. Knowing that, you might want to choose a style that requires little work so you always look your best without a lot of effort.

Measuring your head for a wig

Average wigs fit heads from 21.5" to 22.5". Ninety-five percent of our customers fall into this range. For instructions on how to measure your head size, click here. Your wig should be worn on your natural hairline, approximately four fingers above the eyebrows. The back of the wig should be pulled down to the natural hairline in the back. Wigs have adjustable elastic tabs in the back so you can adjust your wig for a secure, comfortable fit. There are also small tabs in the front of the ears that can be adjusted to hold the wig close to the face.

Heart Shaped Face

Faces that are narrow at the bottom and wide at the top need a cut that hides the hairline with graduated bangs and a choppy style that flips out on the ends. When the hair turns outwards rather than inwards, it equalizes the shape by giving volume around the narrow bottom of the face. If, on the other hand, your face is an upside-down heart (narrow at the top, heavier at the jaw) make sure there is fullness at the top of the head instead to balance out the chin. You may covet your favorite celebrity hairstyle, but if the 'do doesn't fit your face shape, you're likely to be disappointed. If you were lucky enough to be born with a heart-shaped face, then you've got it pretty easy. The structure—shared by Jennifer Love Hewitt, Naomi Campbell and Reese Witherspoon (above)—is the most versatile, so most cuts are guaranteed to look great on you.

*

-Use side-swept or longer bangs to draw attention to your eyes and fantastic cheekbones.
*

-For long hair, wavy layers that fall by your cheeks will also look stunning.
*

-Since your most prominent feature is your chin, be sure to watch out for blunt-cut bangs and excessively choppy layers.
*

-You can wear shorter styles, however, if you are a dramatic heart shape you need to leave weight in the back nape area. This will achieve more balance between your dramatic cheekbones and more narrowing chin.
*

-Chin-length or longer styles. A chin length bob is great on your face shape!

AVOID: Short, full styles that emphasize upper face. Height at the crown. Severe, slicked back looks. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short full styles with tapered necklines which emphasize the upper face will make you look top heavy. Too much height at the crown will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin. Just remember if you have a dramatic heart shape face, you have great cheekbones to emphasize! Don't miss the boat by getting a cut which is to top heavy.

Long/Oblong Shaped Face

The solution for a long face is to make it look shorter. This can be achieved by wispy, see-through bangs and chin length cuts. Longer, shapeless styles and straight bobs serve only to further elongate. The fullest, thickest part of the hair should rest behind the ears and be soft and low on the crown. If your chin is pointy, make sure your hair doesn't curve in towards it, but sweeps up and away instead. If you were born with an oblong or oval-shaped face, you share your facial structure with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, and Jada Pinkett Smith. It's not so much the length you choose that matters; it's more about the feature you want to emphasize. If it's your cheekbones, for instance, try layering chin-length hair so that it falls right at your cheeks and chin. This will create the illusion of width, which waves and curls will only emphasize. If you want to draw attention to your lips and chin, try a choppy bob or a shoulder-skimming straight shag.

*

-To emphasize your shoulders and neck, you'll want longer hair that falls below your collarbone. Make sure to cut your hair in long layers, especially around your face.
*

-Long bangs are also great for you because they create more width to your longer face.
*

-Chin-length bobs and cuts are also ideal for you because they create the illusion of width.
*

-Bangs make your face appear shorter because they cover up a particularly large forehead. Shy away from blunt bangs & go for side swept bangs.

AVOID: Super-short layers on the top of your head. This style isn't the most flattering and will make your face appear too long. If your hair is really thick and curly, try to stay away from a blunt bob or you may end up looking like a pyramid.

Round Shaped Face

Soft, choppy styles such as layers cut around the cheeks work better for round faces than pin-straight, flat or sleek styles do. Layers that fall just around the cheekbones will shade them and cause the face to look more narrow. Volume on top of the crown will create a domed look that adds height and thus elongates the roundness of the face. If you like bangs, graduated bangs cut on an angle that also fall just around the cheeks are your best bet. If your neck is also round, choppy layers that fall around the neckline will also downplay the plumpness. If you have a full, round face, you share your facial structure with Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey, Kate Bosworth, Cameron Diaz, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The shape is characterized by a round chin and lack of sharp angles. Round faces tend to be wider at the cheeks, with softer shaping along the jaw line and forehead. Round faces need balance, which can be achieved with hairstyles that make the face appear longer.

*

-The best styles for your face shape are ones that drape below your jaw line and add a little volume on top of the head.
*

-Soft, long layers are also pretty because they the appearance of a longer and slimmer face. The layers also reduce bulk and heaviness from the sides.
*

-Bangs are flattering, but keep them long or side-swept. Go for wispy and tapered ends to de-emphasize the roundness of your face.
*

-Short hair styles with a swept-back direction or hair styles that are longer than chin length.

AVOID: Try and stay away from blunt cuts if you have short hair. These only emphasize your round face. Chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors face’s round shape. Center parts. Short-short crops, straight "chopped" bangs. Fullness at side of ears. A rounded haircut ending at the chin will certainly add weight to your already round face shape. Because the widest part of your face is at the cheeks and ears, you need to avoid having the fullness of the cut here as it will make your face appear wider.

Oval Shaped Face

The oval is considered to be the "perfect" face shape due to it's popularity and versatility. This is the shape that all haircuts seek to achieve, and people who already have this shape can get away with almost any haircut. The only thing you'll want to be careful about is if you're going for an urban-short look. Your face may be a "classic oval", but if your scalp isn't beautifully shaped a short cut can look misshapen. People that have an oval face shape typically have the easiest time finding a hair style that best suits them, in comparison to people with other face shapes. Here are some tips for finding the right hairstyle for your oval face shape. Due to the fact that the forehead and chin of an oval face shape are well balanced, it is very easy to for you to pull off long, medium or short length hairstyles.

*

-Curls and waves can really add a lot of body to the hair, but it can also slenderize an oval face shape. If you have natural curls then you are in luck. If you do not, however, you may want to consider using rollers or a curling iron to get curls or waves.
*

- Layers look good on just about anybody and people with oval face shapes are no exception.
*

-If you do opt for layers, it is a good idea to avoid layers that are very short because they will elongate your forehead. Even if you choose a shorter layered hairstyle, you will want to choose longer layers that reach at least below the ear.
*

-Bobs are known to look the best on people with oval face shapes. If you like this popular hairstyle, you may want to consider it.

AVOID: Try to stay away from hairstyles which may cover part of your face. These include chucky or side swept bangs, which are both very popular. The reason that you will want to avoid them is because they may cause your face to look wider and, thus, give it a heavier appearance.

Square Shaped Face

Square faces need to avoid short crops, symmetry, or anything geometric which will enhance the square shape; instead, go for soft curves which will soften the severity of the square jaw line. If you can get a slightly voluminous point at the crown, this will also detract from the square outline. Light, wispy, see-through bangs can also soften the features. Stay away from blunt cuts and hard, sleek lines as these will exaggerate the square shape. A cut with soft curves, slight bangs would be best for this face type.If you have a square-shaped face, you share your facial structure with Demi Moore, Mandy Moore, Sandra Bullock, and Rosario Dawson. Having a square face means that you have a wide hairline and an equally wide, angular jaw. The goal with a square face is to soften your hairline with cuts that incorporate bangs, layers, and your hair's natural texture.

*

-Another option is to try wearing your hair in loose layered waves.
*

-Short-to-medium length hair, especially with wave or roundness around the face.
*

-You want to soften the square look of your face with layers and wispy looks around the face.
*

-Height at the crown will elongate your symmetrical shape.
*

-If your hair is straight you may want to consider a body wave, as some curl or wave to the hair will achieve a nice balance to the straight features of your face shape.
*

-Keep in mind that single-length bobs and straight-across bangs aren't great looks for you. They will just make your face look more square.

AVOID: Long straight styles that accentuate square jawbone. "Linear" straight bangs or center parts. A straight bob ending at the jaw line is the wrong thing to do for your face shape. You can wear a layered bob, however it should end above or below the jaw line.

Choosing the right color

Do you look better in silver or gold jewelry?

Important note: If you are naturally a light blonde you probably don't want to suddenly change to a dark color or it will look abnormal. It is usually best to stay within 4 levels of your natural shade, which still offers you a wide range of color choices. If for some reason you feel that determining your color type is too difficult, or you are unsure of your type, simply take a hand-held mirror and stand outside in direct sunlight. Look closely at your hair as the sun is shining on it. Look for the underlying base color that reflects off of your hair. If you see glints of red, orange or gold (yellow) you can choose hair colors with those base colors and feel safe. If the color glinting off your hair is bluish, purplish or greenish you will want to choose hair colors with the blue, violet, or neutral base colors.

Q: How to tell if you'd make a great blonde ?

People who had blonde hair as children have the right skin tone to be blonde adults.

Q: Will I look good in red?

Almost everyone can go red, what's most important is finding the right shade to complement your skin color. Women with a cool or pink skin tone pull off red best.

Synthetic or Human hair?

Synthetic wigs are generally easy to take care of. They come in every color under the rainbow, are fairly resistant to fading and are easy to get your hands on.

Human hair wigs last longer than synthetic ones, when properly cared for.
